CENTRE FOR LEGISLATIVE STUDIES
Addressing the purpose and impact of legislatures
The Centre for Legislative Studies (C4LS) is directed by Professor Lord Norton of Louth and is based at the University of Hull.
Research specialisms
Comparative legislatures, national legislatures, legislative behaviour, cameral relations, legislative-executive relations, legislatures and the courts, legislative theory.
The challenge for the C4LS is to address the purpose and impact of legislatures, the extent to which they are multi-functional and functionally adaptable. This is achieved by organising seminars and workshops, including the biennial Workshop of Parliamentary Scholars and Parliamentarians, and publishing the quarterly, international journal, The Journal of Legislative Studies – founded (in 1995) and edited within the Centre – and The Library of Legislative Studies, also founded and edited within the Centre.
Aims & Objectives
- To generate original research in the field of legislative studies
- To act as a catalyst for inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional research
- To provide an arena for researchers to share findings with parliamentarians and other practitioners
- To publish original research in the field through articles The Journal of Legislative Studies and monographs in the Routledge Library of Legislative Studies, both edited within the Centre
- To act as a catalyst for inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional research, through the Workshop of Parliamentary Scholars and Parliamentarians, for scholars to present research findings likely to be of practical interest to practitioners, and an outlet through The Journal of Legislative Studies, for original research in legislative studies
